Press Conference: Aecon/ Bermuda Internships

Good afternoon.

I am pleased to join Mr. Frank Ross of Aecon, the Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works, Mr. Yves Lortie and of course our two shining stars Mr. Jamar Dill and Mr. Zeeko Johnston.

Before getting to the specifics of today’s conference – it is useful to highlight some of the steps that have brought us to this place.

The Ministry of Public Works participates and supports our staff in a variety of educational and professional endeavors, such as the Basic Employee, Foreman and Superintendent Training Program (known as BeFAST).

Ministerial Statement by the Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David A. Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP

Good Morning Mr. Speaker.

Montserrat Customs and Revenue Service Conclude Consultation with Land Valuation Department

Members of the Montserrat Customs and Revenue Service (MCRS) will conclude their consultation with the Ministry of Public Works’ Land Valuation Department tomorrow, 16 October.

MCRS members have been in Bermuda since 8 October to conduct research on, and observe the following processes:

Hamilton Health Centre

Thank you for coming today to allow me to provide an update on the Hamilton Health Centre.

The Health Centre has been under stress over the past month due to a number of structural problems with the facility and, most recently, for example, three floods at the Hamilton Health Centre, water quality issues,  and several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the problems. The fire at Warwick Clinic further compounded the demands placed on our resources.

Waste Management collection update

Good afternoon.

Let me begin by thanking the people of Bermuda, who have adapted magnificently to the implementation of once a week garbage collection. While there are still some hold outs - in the main people have adjusted and neighbours are taking pride in their own neighbourhoods. As we enter week 9 – we are greatly encouraged by the adjustment and I am pleased to report on progress thus far.

Everyone is aware of the inherited challenges we faced with both personnel and vehicles in the waste management section.

Minister Burch Updates on Garbage Collection

Good morning.

Let me begin this press conference by apologizing to the people of Bermuda for the rapid deterioration in the collection of garbage over the past few days – to say we are facing a number of challenges would be an understatement.

You will be aware from my ministerial statement in Parliament on October 20th last year that there has been an ever increasing challenge with both personnel and vehicles in the waste management section. To remind - an excerpt from that statement and I quote:
