COVID-19 PRESS BRIEFING - The Hon. Renee Ming, JP, MP

Good evening Bermuda,

I wish to start by sharing a few points about the large group guidelines.

I would like to announce that The Cabinet gave consideration to increase the group assembly size from 50 to 75 persons. As such, in accordance with the Public Health Regulations Section 5.3 (A), group sizes will start at 75 persons. This will be effective as of Monday August 17th 2020.

Additionally as it relates to the cricket matches which have been held, I can advise that a decision has been made to increase attendance size at these matches from 250 – 325 attendees.

Update on the Reopening of Bermuda Public Schools

Good Evening Bermuda,

There are now 26 days leading up to the start of the 2020/21 school year, and we look forward to having our students and staff return to our schools.

All school staff will return on September 1st, and our students will return on September 9th. The only students and staff who will not return to school buildings are those staff and students who meet the Department of Health's criteria for the extremely clinically vulnerable as verified by a doctor or physician.  

COVID-19 Update - 12 August

Today there were 732 test results received by the Ministry of Health, and none were positive for COVID-19.

Bermuda has had 159 total confirmed positive cases. Their status is as follows:

  • 145 have recovered, and
  • there are 5 active cases, who are
  • all under active public health monitoring;
  • none is hospitalized or in critical care, and
  •  the total deceased remains 9.

The average age of all of our confirmed positive cases is 59 and the age range of all of our positive cases is from 18 to 101 years.

Perot Post Office services

As a follow up from last week’s announcement by the Ministry of Health that the Perot Post Office is being used as an interim COVID-19 testing centre, the Bermuda Post Office (BPO) is issuing the following.

The BPO notes that it is “very pleased” to collaborate with the Ministry of Health in this national initiative.

The BPO added however, that the Perot Post Office has historical significance and in that regard, the BPO has fielded a number of queries from the public regarding the postal facility’s products and services.

Temporary Interruption in Bus Service Wednesday for Bus Operators’ Meeting

The Department of Public Transportation (DPT) is advising of an upcoming interruption in bus service on Wednesday, 12th August 2020, from 10am until 1:30pm.

The temporary service interruption will facilitate a meeting for all bus operators regarding the transportation of students, under Ministry of Health COVID-19 guidelines, as schools are currently scheduled to re-open in September.

The DPT thanks the public for their continuing support.

DPT Reminds Passengers of COVID-19 Regulations for Public Transportation

The Department of Public Transportation (DPT) is reminding passengers to follow COVID-19 regulations while onboard buses and ferries.

To re-emphasize – all passengers must wear a face mask and maintain a minimum of 3 feet physical distancing.

When choosing your seat, passengers must adhere to seating arrangements that ensure appropriate physical distancing. Keep your face mask on at all times.

COVID-19 Update - 10 August 2020

Good Day Members of the Media, 

Between Sunday and today there were 1,211 test results received by the Ministry of Health, and one was positive for COVID-19.

The latest case was imported on the Delta flight from Atlanta on 3rd August 2020. The case is a returning resident who tested negative on arrival and quarantined until their next on-island test, taken on Saturday 8th and reported on Sunday 9th August. The case has been isolated and contact tracing has begun. 

Ministry of National Security Large Group Exemption

The Ministry of National Security is advising the public that a large group exemption has been granted for an event being hosted by Bermuda Pride tomorrow, August 8.

The Ministry clarified however that the approval is for a recognition event, not a parade. The recognition event will take place at City Hall on the lawn.

The organisers have liaised with the Corporation of Hamilton to ensure the appropriate permissions have been provided. The permission is limited to 30 minutes.
