23 July COVID-19 Update

Good afternoon, Bermuda.

Today, I am joined by the Minister of Health, the Hon. Kim Wilson, the Minister of National Security, the Hon. Renee Ming, and the Minister of Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward. I welcome Minister Ming to her first press conference.

I'm pleased to join you again today as we continue to update Bermuda on the matters surrounding your government's response to the coronavirus pandemic and the work that we are undertaking to ensure that we can repair the harm to our economy that this once in a century event has caused.

Good evening Bermuda,

First and foremost, I wish to extend my thanks to all those who have offered well wishes since my appointment as Minister. I also wish to express my appreciation to the Acting Permanent Secretary, Dr. Danette Ming and all those in the Ministry of National Security who have extended their support in updating me on all the critical matters happening in the Ministry. I’ve come to appreciate that this is an extremely significant Ministry, charged with ensuring the protection and security of our borders and the public safety of our residents.

Department of Planning Cuts Processing Time in Half to Boost the Economy During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Department of Planning has continued to provide key services to the public and industry stakeholders.

Statistics confirm that there was an uptick in developments presented to the Department of Planning, which indicates interest in the construction sector – and is also an indicator of the health of the economy – which positively impacts everyday life in Bermuda.

Today, the Head of the Public Service, Dr. Derrick Binns issued the following, expressing support of the Ministry of Health's Public Officers.

“The last five months have been some of the most difficult and challenging that our Country has faced. Navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigating its associated risks have required focused expertise, dedication and professionalism. These are the traits and characteristics that have been displayed by the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 Public Health Response Team.
 

COVID-19 Protocols for Taxi Examinations at TCD

As a result of COVID-19, the Transport Control Department (TCD) has modified its vehicle examination procedure for taxis whose permits are due to expire on September 30th 2020.

Examiners will not enter customers’ vehicles and for this round of examinations only, there will be no testing of taxi meters.

However, and most importantly, all taxi meters must be sealed. Please note that taxi owners must adhere to the following instructions:
