Ministry of Public Works Budget 2022/23 Highlights

Good afternoon,

Following the Budget Debate for the Ministry of Public Works that took place on the 9th of March, I would like to highlight the departments that were discussed in the house and provide a forward look to the completion of various ongoing projects.

This year like last had resulted in diminished budgets across government with the position taken to strike a balance between services provided and the maintenance  of current staffing levels.

Bermuda Housing Trust Audited Financials for the Year 2021

Good morning, Mr. Speaker, I lay before this Honourable House the Bermuda Housing Trust (“the Trust”) Audited Financial Statements for the fiscal year ending March 2021.

Mr. Speaker, just like many other organizations in Bermuda, the financial year 2020-21 proved to be a challenging year for the Bermuda Housing Trust due almost entirely to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Update on the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy Facility

Mr. Speaker, I rise to provide the House with an update on the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy facility.

Mr. Speaker, you will recall back in December of 2021, the island was facing a crisis with waste disposal. The full shutdown of the Tynes Bay facility due to boiler failures and the untimely failure of the baling contingency system - meant the island unfortunately had to resort to landfilling for a period of seven (7) days.

Update on Road Works 20th January, 2022

Good afternoon,

As Acting Minister of Public Works, I am pleased to provide an update on the ongoing trench work being carried out across the island and to share the plans for asphalting the roads.

Firstly, I want to recognize the frustration experienced by members of the public who have had to contend with what must seem like a never-ending series of stoplights. Your patience is very much appreciated.

I am pleased to announce that the critical work carried out to reinforce the section of Harbour Road between Lover’s Lane and Highwood Lane has been completed.

Clarification Re: KBB Press Release - Christmas Day at Elbow Beach

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works wishes to clarify a statement issued in error by the Government earlier today on behalf of Keep Bermuda Beautiful, which detailed plans for managing trash at Elbow Beach and arranging for parking at a nearby hotel property for the customary Elbow Beach Christmas Celebrations.

The Ministry apologises for any inconvenience caused and can now advise that due to the recently implemented public health measures, the parking and other volunteer support indicated in the previous release will no longer be available.
