Get tested for sexually transmitted infections

The Communicable Disease Control Clinic provides confidential testing, treatment and counseling in the area of sexually transmitted infections including HIV and AIDS.  

The clinic provides confidential screening for:

  • bacterial vaginosis (BV)
  • chlamydia
  • herpes
  • HIV
  • gonorrhea
  • non-gonococcal urethritis
  • syphilis
  • trichomonas (Trich)
  • yeast infections

Requirements

You must be 16-years-old. If you are under 16-years-old, you must be accompanied by an adult.

How do I get screened for sexually transmitted infections?

You can visit the the clinic at 67 Victoria Street in Hamilton (enter clinical area D on the 2nd floor of the Department of Health). You will need to fill out a form with personal demographics and provide the Public Health Nurse with information to assist you.  Contact tracing will be conducted.

Appointments are required.

Fees

The service is free, however for males over 18 without insurance there is a small free for send away tests. Clients with insurance will receive an Rx for treatment. There is a small fee for medication.  The cost varies according to prescribed medication needed. Male and female condoms are free.

How long will it take to obtain results?

Allow at least 48 to 72 hours for results.  Some tests can be done within 30mins upon request.  Send away tests can take up to 7 to 14 business days.

If medication is required, complete it and return to clinic for a test of cure as advised by the PHN

Maintaining sexual and reproductive health

Ask your partner questions about their sexual and risky behaviors (ie, multiple partners or drug use) and use a male or female condom with each sexual encounter. You and your partner should get tested before having sex.
