COVID-19 Update: 16 June

Good evening Bermuda.

I'm joined at today's press conference by the Minister of Health, Kim Wilson, who will give an update on the continued work of the Ministry of Health in battling COVID-19. We also have the Minister of National Security, Wayne Caines, who will discuss the murder and other acts of violence which took place this weekend.

Minister Wayne Caines Statement Re: Hurricane Humberto

Following a meeting this morning with the Emergency agencies who were at COMOPS overnight, I can confirm the following:

The Causeway is closed and will remain closed until further notice. Structural engineers are currently examining the surface of the causeway and will then conduct an underwater assessment.

Government Offices will remain closed today. 

All public schools will also remain closed today.

Hurricane Humberto Update From the Bermuda Weather Service

     - Hurricane Humberto racing away into the distant northern Atlantic
     - The only warning in effect for Bermuda is a Small Craft Warning
     - NW winds 18-22knots will veer n 10-15 by tonight
     - Seas about still about 20ft will abate, becoming 10-15ft tonight,  7-11ft Friday then 6-9ft Saturday
     - Swell will persist for a few days, currently NW but becoming N later today or tomorrow

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) Update: 

As of 12 AM, the BFRS had received a total of 45 calls:

  • - 16 automatic fire alarms;
  • - 17 minor incidents (including gas leaks, pole/ transformer fires);
  • - 9 medicals;
  • - 3 structural fires that were not serious; and 
  • - calls for minor incidents were also received.
