Traveling salespersons are not permitted to visit Bermuda to sell products without first obtaining a Periodic Permit.

Purpose and Specifications

An employer can apply for a Standard Permit for a person who is already employed by a global company in another jurisdiction to transfer to the Bermuda office without the requirement to advertise the position. The company must demonstrate that the Work Permit holder is not being transferred to fill a pre-existing position in Bermuda. If the Work Permit holder falls within a job category where a statutory council must be consulted that must still be done (see section 3.12).

All jobs that are not categorised as closed, restricted or special are considered open category jobs.

Closed Category Jobs

Jobs include: Airline Ground Agent; Retail Floor Supervisor; General Labourer; Office Receptionist; Painter; Salesperson; Tourist Retail Salesperson; Taxi Driver; Wallpaper Technician; Grocery Packer; Cashier; and Courier.

There are many different types of residence you can apply for.  These types include:

A Letter of Permission may be granted for business activities up to one (1) year but the person is limited to no more than 30 days per visit. An extension of time to continue business activities is not permitted.

A Letter of Permission may be granted to carry out a business activity that falls outside of the activities specified under 2.1 (iii) of this policy and which lasts no more than fourteen (14) consecutive days. Activities may include but are not limited to:

a. providing services or entertainment to a private wedding function,

Landing permits are issued to assist work permit holders who have a need to travel during the period of time when a new Standard Work Permit is being processed by the Department of Immigration on their behalf. In all cases, although the application has been submitted, there is no decision on the work permit at the time of travel. A landing permit provides proof that the work permit holder has a right of residence in Bermuda (after their work permit has expired) and allows the work permit holder to be appropriately landed upon return to Bermuda.

Purpose and Specifications

The purpose of a Standard Work Permit is to allow all organizations in Bermuda to employ foreign nationals if they can demonstrate that a Bermudian, Spouse of a Bermudian, Belonger, Spouse of a Belonger, or PRC holder was not suitably qualified or available to be hired. Employers may apply for Standard Work Permits of one (1), two (2), three (3), four (4) or five (5) years.
