The Ministry of Home Affairs today announced that Bermuda has formally joined the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) following the signing of the Alliance’s establishing Declaration by the Hon. Alexa N. H. Lightbourne, JP, MP, Minister of Home Affairs.
Led by the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance brings together more than 20 participating countries and over 50 strategic partners, including governments, private-sector organisations, international organisations, financial and research institutions, and technology providers.
The Alliance works to accelerate improvements in energy efficiency through international cooperation, knowledge sharing, technical support, capacity building and practical energy-efficiency initiatives.
Bermuda’s path towards membership began in February 2026, when Minister Lightbourne participated in the GEEA Ministerial Roundtable during the World Governments Summit in Dubai and signed a Declaration of Participation on behalf of the Government of Bermuda.
The establishing Declaration formalises Bermuda’s membership in the Alliance. For the purposes of this Declaration, Bermuda will be treated as a “State Participant” pursuant to Article 4.1 - Categories of Participants, notwithstanding the fact that Bermuda is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.
As a participating member, Bermuda will build working relationships with energy ministries, government agencies and technical partners in other jurisdictions. Membership also creates opportunities to exchange expertise, evaluate emerging technologies, strengthen institutional capacity and identify partnerships that can assist Bermuda in determining how best to power the future of the Island.
Minister Lightbourne said, “Bermuda’s membership in the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance strengthens our ability to engage with countries and organisations working to address many of the same energy challenges we face. It gives us a direct way to exchange knowledge, explore practical solutions and develop partnerships that can support Bermuda’s energy transition.
“As we implement the National Electricity Sector Policy 2026, our objective is an electricity system that is affordable, reliable, resilient, sustainable and equitable for all Bermudians. Our energy transition covers both how electricity is generated and how efficiently it is used across our homes, businesses and public infrastructure. Through GEEA, Bermuda can draw on international experience and technical knowledge as we assess the measures that can lower costs for Bermudian households and businesses. Every unit of electricity saved is money a household keeps.”
Bermuda’s membership complements the direction set by the National Electricity Sector Policy 2026, which guides the development of the Island’s electricity sector through 2045. The policy identifies energy efficiency, demand-side management, appliance standards, building performance, consumer education and improved energy-use data as important components of Bermuda’s future electricity system.
