The Transport Control Department (TCD) is preparing to introduce a Garage Compliance Programme as part of the Government of Bermuda's ongoing efforts to modernise regulatory processes, strengthen oversight and improve compliance standards across the island.
The programme, which is expected to launch in November 2026, will support the implementation of the Garages Licensing Act 2022 by establishing a structured and consistent approach to garage licensing and compliance. It will provide operators with clearer guidance on their legislative obligations, including applicable licensing, safety, documentation and inspection requirements.
The initiative is intended to benefit both garage operators and the wider public by promoting safer operating environments, strengthening consumer confidence and ensuring that businesses are held to consistent standards. By establishing a clearer compliance framework, TCD aims to improve accountability across the industry while supporting responsible garage operators.
The Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, said: “When members of the public take their vehicles to a garage, they should have confidence that the business operates in accordance with established safety and licensing standards. This programme is part of our wider commitment to modernising Government processes, strengthening regulatory oversight and ensuring that standards are applied consistently across the industry.
“We recognise that some businesses may need time to complete inspections, obtain documentation or make adjustments to their premises. Our intention is to work collaboratively with garage operators, providing clear guidance and a reasonable opportunity to meet their obligations.”
In preparation for the programme's launch, TCD is encouraging all garage operators to familiarise themselves with the requirements and begin gathering the necessary documentation.
Information about the programme, including applicable licensing and compliance requirements, is available on the TCD website at https://tcd.bm/garage-compliance/.
