Public Works Team Bolsters Number of Garbage Trucks in Service

The Ministry of Public Works advises that an acute shortage of the number of operational garbage collection trucks for the Island has been improved thanks to valiant efforts by the Public Works team.

The Minister of Public Works the Hon. Lt. Col. David Burch said: “Today we are pleased to report that we now have ten trucks in service, which amounts to 67 per cent of our fleet, up from four trucks a few weeks ago.

“This is a marked improvement. I am extremely proud of the work that has been done to get the trucks back in service. 

Regulating Single-use Plastics in Bermuda: Results from the Public Consultation and the Next Steps

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to inform this Honourable House of the results of the public consultation on single-use plastics that was conducted during the autumn of 2021.  Honourable members will be aware that a policy was launched in August entitled: “Regulating Single-use plastics in Bermuda:  Policy paper for public consultation”. I would also like to inform Honourable Members of the next steps that we intend to take to ensure the realization of this Throne Speech initiative.

Good Friday Garbage Collection Advisory

The Ministry of Public Works is advising that due to the Good Friday holiday (Friday, April 2), garbage normally collected on that day will be collected on Saturday, April 3, 2021.

As a reminder, Friday garbage collection areas include Smith’s Parish east of Devil’s Hole, all of Hamilton and St. George’s parishes except the Old Town. East recycling collection areas include St. George’s, Hamilton, Smith’s, Pembroke, and Devonshire parishes with the exclusion of Tee Street and Kent Avenue.

Please place bagged garbage out for collection no later than 7:30 a.m. 

Recycling Bins Available for Sale from November 12

The Ministry of Public Works is advising that the Waste Management Section, as part of the pilot programme involving the sale of household garbage and recycling bins, has recycling bins available for sale from November 12.

Please note that due to the overwhelming public response to this initiative, the garbage bins have all been sold.

The wheeled plastic recycling bins with lids have a capacity of 140 litres (37 gallons) and are available at a price of $40.00 each.

As a reminder, quantities for purchase are limited to two per household.

Wheeled Bins for sale

The Ministry of Public Works is advising that the Waste Management Section has started a pilot programme involving the sale of household waste and recycling wheeled bins for to the public.

  • The wheeled plastic garbage bins with lids have a capacity of 360 litres (95 gallons) and are $125.00 each (NO LONGER IN STOCK).
  • The wheeled plastic recycling bins with lids have a capacity of 140 litres (37 gallons) and are available at a price of $40.00 each.

The Ministry notes that quantities for purchase are limited to two per household for each bin.

Reminder from the Ministry of Public Works

The Tynes Bay Waste To Energy Facility, under The Ministry of Public Works, would like to remind all customers that the inclusion of metal waste in loads of burnable waste being delivered to the facility is prohibited.  Metal items can cause substantial damage to the facility, necessitating shut-downs which result in a build-up of burnable waste and the inability to produce electricity.  

Public Reminder Regarding Incorrect Disposal of Medical Waste

The Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Health & Seniors would like to remind the public that medical waste requires special handling and disposal. This advisory comes as a notable increase of inappropriate materials being included in bags of household waste, blue recycling bags and public bus stop bins has been observed. Incorrect waste disposal presents a public health risk and can also directly injure waste collection workers and recycling centre workers.
