Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Celebrates Leopards Club International's 75th Anniversary

Leopards Club President Deroy Butterfield

"On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, congratulations to the Leopards Club International (Bermuda) celebrating a remarkable 75th anniversary. This momentous occasion marks the longevity of this esteemed organisation and serves as a testament to its enduring commitment to fostering unity and equality in our community." said the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, the Hon. Senator Owen Darrell, JP.

"Established during a period of racial segregation, the club was founded by five visionary black men who sought to create a space that transcended racial barriers. Their unwavering belief in brotherhood and sisterhood laid the foundation for an organisation that has stood the test of time."

"From its inception, the Leopards Club has profoundly impacted the community. By accepting all people as brothers and sisters, regardless of their racial background, the club became a beacon of hope during a dark period of segregation. A highlight of the Leopard’s Club legacy is its commitment to addressing the pressing issues of the day. The club provided a platform for open dialogue through their monthly dinners, bringing together local and international speakers to discuss matters shaping our world. These discussions were not merely conversations but catalysts for change, laying the groundwork for a more equitable and just society."

Minister Darrell concluded, "Looking ahead, we are excited about the Department of Culture's upcoming cultural conference that will take place at the Leopards Club during Heritage Month in May. We eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes that will emerge from this partnership, strengthening community bonds and fostering a sense of pride in our shared heritage."
