Minister to host Youth engagement networking event

The Department of Youth & Sport is encouraging all young people over the age of 18 to attend the next “Zone-In” community engagement event.

Zone-In 18+ will take place June 29, 6.00pm, at the Young Men’s Social Club’s Blue Diamond Lounge. This event promises to be a lively forum aimed at giving Bermuda’s young adults an opportunity to express their views, concerns and ideas as it relates to Bermuda.

Social media sensation Shawn “Mr. Fotogenik” Simmons will lead an interactive discussion followed by DJ iBreeze, who will provide entertainment during the networking part of the event. The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen K. Darrell will host Zone-In 18+ and is urging any and all young people who care about Bermuda's youth to plan to be at the event.

Minister Darrell said, “Earlier this year we held several community engagement meetings that focused on hearing directly from our young people. They were extremely productive meetings, and so we want to continue with this formula of providing our future generation of leaders with an open platform to be heard.”

The Minister notes that part of the discussion will centre around the National Youth Policy (NYP) and its eight (8) goals and objectives.

However the Minister stressed that the June 29th social will also be an occasion to have an informal exchange and discuss shared experiences and learn from the young people in the room.

As a reminder, the eight goals of the National Youth Policy are:

  • Keep young people safe and protected from harm;
  • Achieve full potential in learning, development and education;
  • Minimize anti-social behaviour;
  • Increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities;
  • Engage youth in sport, culture and recreation;
  • Support young people to be active and healthy;
  • Enable participation in civic engagement; and
  • Encourage diversity and inclusion.
