The Premier and Minister of Finance, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, is in Antigua and Barbuda, where he is participating in the Commonwealth Business Forum, taking place alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings.
As part of the Forum, the Premier is participating in three discussions: “Commonwealth RE: Mutualizing Disaster Risk”, hosted at the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Pavilion; “Investing in Climate-Vulnerable Markets”, a roundtable exploring opportunities to mobilise investment and strengthen climate resilience; and “Tourism for a Changing World”, a discussion focused on attracting investment, diversifying tourism offerings and building more resilient tourism economies.
The discussions provide an opportunity to share Bermuda's experience as a leading international insurance and reinsurance centre, including its role in managing global catastrophe risks, while also contributing to conversations on attracting tourism investment, diversifying visitor experiences and building more resilient economies. The Premier is also holding meetings with stakeholders during his visit.
Premier Burt said, “As a small island, Bermuda understands firsthand the challenges posed by climate change. At the same time, our position as a global insurance and reinsurance centre gives us an important role in helping other jurisdictions manage these risks.
“Bermuda's experience demonstrates that small jurisdictions can play an important role in addressing global challenges, and these engagements provide an opportunity to contribute our perspective to those discussions.”
Bermuda was also represented in Antigua & Barbuda by four young cricketers, Isaiah O’Brien, Keegan Jones, Sa-Qui Robinson and Zeri Tomlinson, who were selected to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) T10 Under-23 Exhibition Match, held on 1 November at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.
The Premier is scheduled to return to Bermuda on Thursday, 5 November, and will be in the House of Assembly on Friday, 6 November, where he will outline a new round of tax relief measures to provide further financial support to Bermudians.
