The Department of Culture hosted the unveiling of Hendrickson’s Way on Glebe Road on August 22, recognising generations of the Hendrickson family behind H&H Gombeys and their contribution to Bermuda’s Gombey tradition and the Glebe Road community. The commemorative naming pays particular tribute to four late members of the family: Carolyn Isabell Louise “Granny” Hendrickson, Lawrence “Stickers” Hendrickson Sr. (“Papa”), Lawrence “Stickers” Hendrickson Jr., and Zaniko Hendrickson, who passed away in December 2025. Their influence continues through the generations of the Hendrickson family who remain active in Gombey and community life today.
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, reflected on the Hendrickson family’s longstanding connection to Glebe Road and Bermuda’s Gombey tradition. He said, “This commemorative naming honours those Hendricksons who came before us, while recognising that their legacy remains alive in the family members carrying it forward today. Their drums have been part of the soundtrack of this neighbourhood, their dance part of its rhythm, and their home a gathering place for family, culture, and community.”
Hendrickson’s Way is a commemorative road naming, meaning that Glebe Road retains its official name and existing addresses remain unchanged. Commemorative namings are considered through an established Government process, with proposals reviewed by the Naming and Recognition Committee. The Department of Culture worked with the family and relevant partners to bring the recognition to fruition.
Hendrickson’s Way gives visible recognition to the family’s place in the history and culture of Glebe Road, including its contributions to Gombey culture and Bermuda’s maritime tradition, while celebrating the generations who continue that tradition today.
