The Ministry of National Security, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Ministry of Economy and Labour, and the Ministry of Health have joined with the registered charity HOME to support Bermuda’s housing programme at Astor House, Bermuda’s dedicated transitional living programme for adult men requiring reintegration assistance following incarceration.
Located at 38 Union Street, Hamilton, Astor House provides a structured, supportive bridge from incarceration to independent community living. Recently, Ministry representatives signed the official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), solidifying the collaboration across Government departments and HOME.
The programme provides temporary housing, case management, skills development, employment support and maintenance, and opportunities for positive, pro-social community engagement. Together, these supports are intended to help residents build the stability, skills, and connections needed to move towards greater independence.
The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, thanked her Cabinet colleagues, public officers, and HOME for their collaborative efforts in bringing Astor House to fruition.
Minister Furbert said, “On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I wish to express my sincere thanks to Denise Carey and the entire team at HOME, as well as the dedicated public officers across Government who have worked tirelessly to realise Astor House.”
“Today, we are seeing the value of what can be achieved when Government and community partners come together around a shared goal. Successful reintegration is about more than providing a place to stay. It is about giving people the structure, support, skills and opportunities they need to make positive choices, rebuild their lives and become productive members of our community.”
Minister of Justice, the Senator, the Hon. Kim Wilkerson, JP, said, “A safe and successful transition from incarceration back into the community benefits everyone. When we help individuals establish stability, maintain employment, strengthen positive relationships, and develop a sense of purpose, we also help reduce the risk of reoffending and create safer, stronger communities.”
Minister of Health, the Hon. Kim Wilson, JP, MP, acknowledged the value of having a dedicated reintegration living space. Minister Wilson noted, “Astor House represents an important step forward in our approach to rehabilitation and reintegration. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that individuals ready to make positive changes have access to the support they need to do so.”
Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, JP, MP, also paid tribute to the team for their efforts. “I am particularly pleased with the collaboration demonstrated by our Government departments and HOME throughout this process,” said Minister Hayward. “This initiative shows what is possible when we work across traditional departmental lines and combine public resources with the knowledge, experience and commitment of our community partners.”
