The 2026 Gombey Festival, held by The Department of Culture, took place on Saturday, October 3, and drew an exceptional turnout from residents and visitors alike. The event, held under the stars, was a vibrant celebration of Bermuda’s rich cultural heritage and the artistry of its iconic Gombey tradition. This year’s festival paid tribute to the late Zaniko Hendrickson of the H&H Gombeys, honouring his dedication and lasting contribution to the preservation of the Gombey legacy. His enduring impact was celebrated as the festival marked yet another memorable chapter in Bermuda’s rich cultural calendar.
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, said, “The Gombey tradition is one of Bermuda’s most treasured cultural expressions, connecting generations through rhythm, movement, creativity, and community. The Gombey Festival allows us to celebrate the incredible individuals and troupes who dedicate themselves to keeping this tradition vibrant and relevant. I encourage everyone to experience the energy and passion of our Gombeys and to take pride in the important role they play in telling Bermuda’s story.”
The evening began with a captivating opening performance by PHC Majorettes and Drum Corps, whose vibrant energy and rhythm set the tone for the night’s festivities. Audiences were treated to dazzling showcases from several of the island’s finest Gombey troupes, including Place’s New Generation Gombeys, SMS Village Gombeys, Gombey Evolution, Phoenix Gombeys, Gombey Warriors, Warwick Gombeys, Vibe Tribe Gombeys, and H&H Gombeys. The Warwick Gombeys also paid tribute to Rickai “Pugi” Raynor, honouring his memory and his connection to the Gombey community. The programme also featured electrifying performances by Fire Wayne, Aalai, and Rated E Dance Crew, creating an atmosphere of unity, pride, and celebration throughout the event.
This year’s successful celebration once again demonstrated why the festival continues to hold such a special place in the hearts of the Bermudian community.
