The Department of Culture has premiered Black Businesses in Bermuda: Trials, Tribulations, Triumphs, a documentary exploring the history, experiences and contributions of Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across Bermuda. The film highlights both established family businesses and newer ventures, while examining the resilience and evolution of Black enterprise in Bermuda.
Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, said: “Black businesses have played an important role in shaping Bermuda’s economic, social and cultural landscape. This documentary allows us to recognise the determination and achievements of generations of Black entrepreneurs, while ensuring that these important stories are preserved and shared with future generations.”
Produced by Marq Rodriguez, with historical research and support from Meredith Ebbin, the documentary features Craig Simmons, Reginald John Raynor, Anwar Telford, Donna Pearman, Tamara Richardson, Dennie O’Connor, Michael Leverock, Chelsea Warren, Astoria Smith and Marico Thomas. The film was previewed in July 2026, and is now accessible to the wider public.
Black Businesses in Bermuda: Trials, Tribulations, Triumphs was produced as part of the Department of Culture’s 2026 Emancipation programming and is now available on the Department of Culture’s YouTube channel, Black Enterprise in Bermuda: Trials, Tribulations, Triumphs. Members of the public are encouraged to view the documentary and learn more about the people and businesses that form an important part of Bermuda’s history.
