Mutual Evaluation Report on Bermuda’s Anti-Money Laundering/Countering Financing of Terrorism Framework

Mr. Speaker, I am extremely pleased to rise today to advise Honourable Members of the outstanding findings included in the recently published Mutual Evaluation Report (MER) of Bermuda’s systems and framework to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism and proliferation.

Assessment of Local Charities Sector

Oyster Consulting (Bermuda) Ltd. has been engaged by the Registry General to assist with a national assessment of the entire local charities sector. This is being conducted to identify if any entities are vulnerable to being used as a conduit for terrorist financing. 

Oyster Consulting (Bermuda) Ltd., on behalf of the Registry General, will be contacting local churches, charitable trusts, companies limited by guarantee or any other legal entity set up in Bermuda as a charity, for relevant information to assess whether there are any potential risks.

Just Good Business campaign highlights importance of AML/ATF regime

A public awareness campaign calling on Bermuda residents to join a national effort to combat global financial crime was announced today by Bermuda Premier and Finance Minister, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP.

The “Just Good Business” campaign (http://www.goodbusiness.bm) highlights efforts underway by government, responsible authorities, and Bermuda-based international and local businesses to ensure the island meets the highest standards for anti-money-laundering (AML) and anti-terrorist-financing (ATF).

Registry General Sets Out Criteria for Assessing Risk Profiles of Bermuda Charities

Keeping in line with Bermuda’s active international effort to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, the Registrar General, in consultation with the National Anti-Money Laundering Committee (NAMLC), have been tasked with monitoring and regulating the charities sector to ensure that these organizations are not being used for money laundering or terrorist financing.

These are fast-moving times, and this Government is committed to ensuring Bermuda keeps up. We have hit the ground running and intend to maintain that momentum.

I have promised regular updates on the Government’s plans as we progress our agenda for a better and fairer Bermuda and this is why I stand before you today.
