Interested seniors are being encouraged to share their stories by participating in an upcoming writing workshop.

For the second time, the Bermuda National Library (BNL) in partnership with Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and Friends of the Bermuda National Library will offer a Senior Citizens’ Workshop starting 29 April, 2019.

The workshop is free and will be facilitated by Florenz Webbe Maxwell, an award-winning Bermudian author, storyteller, and former head of Youth Services at the Bermuda National Library.

The Minister of Labour, Community Affairs and Sports the Hon. Lovitta Foggo JP, MP, is urging that interested seniors to sign up for the programme noting, “Our seniors have such a wealth of knowledge to share. We want to encourage them to document their stories through our seniors’ writers workshop. We think this is a wonderful way for our community to learn more about our rich and often untold history.”

Individuals 60 and over should submit a writing sample of around 250-500 words of to the Bermuda National Library c/o Kenisha Shakir. All submissions and assignments should be typed and emailed to kashakir@gov.bm and avstone@gov.bm. The deadline for submissions is 22 April.

The seniors’ writing workshop is scheduled to take place Mondays and Thursdays (see flyer for dates and times). Limited space is available. The public will recall that a similar workshop was held in 2018, where 12 seniors participated. It is hoped that stories from the combined workshops will be published in an anthology of Bermudian Memoirs for Young People, edited by Mrs. Maxwell and Dr. Kim Dismont-Robinson.
