The Minister of Transport, the Hon. Wayne L. Furbert, JP, MP, is pleased to announce that United Airlines will extend their Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Bermuda seasonal service to 26 October 2024 with the larger and newer 166-seat 737 Max 8. This represents a 71% increase in the total days of scheduled flights from 123 days in 2019 to 210 days planned in 2024. United advised that there may be further extensions to their BDA schedule if there is travel demand and based on their operational capacity.
Minister Furbert, and Bermuda’s air service development team met with United Airlines’ executives on 9 February 2024 at United’s headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. The other members of the Bermuda contingent included Lester Nelson, CEO of Bermuda Airport Authority; Aaron Adderley, President of Skyport; and Erin Smith, COO of Bermuda Tourism Authority.
The Minister thanked United Airlines for their many years of direct air service from EWR to BDA, and the Minister and his team agreed to continue to work with United’s team to work toward elongating United’s seasonal schedule for the EWR to BDA service, which operated year-round in the past.
United said they were pleased with the EWR to BDA route performance for the 2023 season and they are hopeful that there will be opportunities to continue to grow the service with additional seat capacity over for the next 3 years. The Minister explained that demand for air travel to and from Bermuda’s number one market, New York City, is expected to grow due to planned increased hotel room capacity. United said that Bermuda is a very strong market for them with the route being part of the success of their 60 destinations in the Bermuda, Caribbean and Latin American Region.
The Minister thanked United, as one of Bermuda’s key airline stakeholders, for their continued service to Bermuda and he welcomed ongoing collaboration between United Airlines and the Bermuda Team to strengthen the current air service and to explore new air service opportunities within United’s network.
