On June 26, more than 40 stakeholders representing Government ministries, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector convened for a pivotal workshop focused on revitalising the Well Bermuda Strategy, a comprehensive, prevention-first national framework to improve public health through better nutrition.
The Hon. Kim Wilson, JP, MP, Minister of Health, opened the event with a powerful message about the urgent need for action. “Bermuda is facing serious nutrition-related health challenges that are negatively affecting individuals and families and placing a significant burden on our healthcare system and national economy. If we want to make meaningful progress, we must reshape our nutrition environment,” she stated.
Assistant Director of the Ministry of Health, Ms. Verlina Bishop, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the strategy, underscoring its focus on sustainable, community-driven approaches to wellness. “Nutrition is a powerful determinant of health, and our approach must be rooted in equity, inclusion, and long-term impact. The updated Well Bermuda Strategy reflects our dedication to creating healthier spaces in schools, workplaces, and communities, where making the healthy choice is the easy choice. This workshop was an important step in aligning our collective efforts and reaffirming our shared responsibility to the people of Bermuda,” she said.
Dr. Virloy Lewin, Health Promotion and Wellness Coordinator, delivered a compelling overview of Bermuda’s current health status, presenting data and insights to highlight the critical link between nutrition and chronic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs). “Bermuda is facing serious nutrition-related health challenges that impact individuals, families, and the nation’s economy. If we want to improve public health and reduce long-term costs, we must focus on creating a healthier nutrition environment. The Well Bermuda Revamp is our roadmap, a coordinated, prevention-focused approach to building a healthier, stronger future for all.”
Dr. Brittney Jones, Policy Analyst, presented the updated strategic framework for the Well Bermuda Strategy, emphasizing a more integrated and forward-thinking approach to public health.
Dr. Jones stated, "At the core of this revitalized plan are four foundational pillars designed to drive long-term improvements in the island’s nutrition landscape and overall well-being. The Prevention pillar focuses on identifying and addressing upstream social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to poor nutrition and related health inequities. Promotion aims to build momentum around healthier eating and lifestyle choices by engaging individuals, families, and communities.
“The Policy pillar supports the development of sustainable, evidence-based regulations and initiatives that foster healthier environments. Lastly, Partnerships underscore the importance of local and international collaboration to amplify impact and ensure a coordinated national response. Together, these pillars represent a whole-of-society commitment to transforming Bermuda’s health trajectory”.
Interactive working sessions allowed attendees to review proposed initiatives, evaluate expected outcomes, and refine the strategic direction. The event concluded with a clear roadmap: an updated strategy draft will be released in August 2025, with a formal launch scheduled for October.
Minister Wilson concluded that: “This workshop is not simply about reviewing a draft. It is a call for co-ownership and enduring commitment. The agencies represented play a pivotal role in translating this strategy into action. As we begin to examine our nutrition environment, we must each ask ourselves: What policies can we champion? What barriers can we remove? And how can our departments and organizations align their efforts more effectively for the public good?
”I am grateful for the collective commitment, leadership, and collaboration of the participants. It was a productive and insightful workshop.”
The workshop's collaborative energy marks a decisive step forward in Bermuda’s national health agenda, uniting cross-sector partners in a shared commitment to creating a healthier island community.
