The Restaurant Server Programme graduation remarks by the Minister of Labour, Cultural Affairs and Sports, Minister Lovitta Foggo. The recognition event took place last week Thursday. This is a wonderful day for our graduates.
First let me thank Take Five Limited, the Department of Workforce Development, the facilitators and students for the successful launch of the Restaurant Server programme.
The Take Five Limited Training Academy initiative was derived from a desire to create more highly skilled Bermudians in preparation for current and future labor needs within the Hospitality Industry.
It's no secret, that within the next few years two prestigious hotel chains will be opening their doors in Bermuda. This Government and all our relevant stakeholders have an obligation to ensure that local talent interested in careers within the hospitality industry are equipped with the skills needed to attract and retain gainful employment.
I believe that, more initiatives like this will foster the development of Bermudians to lessen the knowledge gap of local talent within the hospitality industry.
The Restaurant Server programme was a three-week academic and practical training programme that offered its participants exposure to entry level positions within the industry.
Participants learned how to set tables, carry multiple plates, place orders, mix beverages, identify exotic foods, learn about food allergies and dietary needs, learn about wines and spirits and of course how to make a perfect cup coffee. What an exciting experience!
At the end of the training four participants were offered immediate employment with Take Five Limited.
The names of the remaining participants were forwarded to other hotels and restaurants with good recommendations for sustainable employment opportunities.
We also wish to highlight the four senior school students that participated in the training programme, and look forward to potential summer employment opportunities in the Hospitality Industry.
Each successful participant will receive an international certificate as a Restaurant Server from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and a Certificate of Completion from Take Five Limited.
This Government promised to provide training and employment opportunities for Bermudians and we are delivering on that promise.
I believe that this is an example of industry partnering with Government for the betterment of Bermuda and its people. I for one am excited to see what waits ahead for this programme and its participants.
