The Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport: Sports Stage 1 Announcement

The Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport announced today that in light of the new restrictions to curb the current outbreak, Organised Sports is moving to Stage 1 of the Return to Play Guidance. This is effective immediately.

As a note, the Ministry confirmed that the National Sports Governing Bodies (NSGBs) have been advised that sports is moving to Stage 1.

Stage 1 applies only to outdoor sports as gyms and all indoor recreational facilities are closed under the public health emergency measures.

Stage 1 allows only non-competitive training for exercise and technical development. Guidelines include:

  • Individual activities
  • Groups of 10
  • No contact
  • 6 feet apart
  • No fans

While Stage 1 activities are permitted, any activity that causes the mixing of households needs to be avoided.

Persons who can find alternative outlets for physical activity are encouraged to favour individual exercise and avoid contact with non-household members, as recommended by the Minsiter of Health.

The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. the Hon Ernest Peets said, "It is heartbreaking to find ourselves here again, forced to adjust one of the very things that bring us mental and physical wellbeing during such trying times. However, I ask that we all cooperate and follow the advice not to mix households, as that is powering this current outbreak.

"We are a resilient people and we can get through this. Sport is a vital part of Bermuda's soul and I know we can find alternatives until this outbreak is under control. Help stop the spread and avoid being in close contact others outside your household bubble."
