The Minister of Social Development and Sports the Hon. Michael Weeks JP MP today congratulated athlete Sakari Famous for her bronze medal win in the Under 20 Girls High Jump this week at the CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas.
Minister Weeks said, “Sakari did an excellent job; her performance was simply outstanding. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to cheer her on from the side-lines as she completed her top leap of 1.79m.
"I also want to congratulate several athletes who achieved their personal best at the Games including Deneo Brangman, Clevonte Lodge, Ashley Irby and Amelia Othman. It takes a great deal of training, dedication and determination to get to where all these athletes are today and I want to offer them a heartfelt congratulations for all their efforts; they do us proud.
"In addition, I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the hard work and gallant effort of all athletes - Taylor Hines, Robert Edwards Jr., Elisha Darrell, Jessie Marshall, Tilda Norman, Ryan Outerbridge, Johndell Cumberbatch and Isabelle Dutranoit."
Minister Weeks attended the stadium every day and said he was proud to watch Bermuda's young athletes compete and represent the island at the CARIFTA 2018 Games.
On Sunday April 1st, Minister Weeks had the opportunity to meet with Bahamian Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert Minnis MP and the Bahamian Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Michael Pintard MP at the stadium. Minister Weeks also had the honour of presenting medals to the winners of the Under 17 Girls 3000m competition.
The Bermuda Team returns home today, April 3rd, and Minister Weeks encourages all residents to come out and welcome them back at the L.F. Wade Airport this evening (AA Miami flight).
Minister Weeks said he is also very pleased at the superb performances by Bermuda's swimmers who won several medals while competing in the CARIFTA Swimming Championships which were held at the National Aquatic Centre in Kingston, Jamaica. He encourages Bermudians to show their support by welcoming our young swimmers at the L.F. Wade Airport when they return home on Wednesday night (April 4th, AA Miami flight).
