Last month (October 6), Sports Ministers and representatives from sports Ministries across the Caribbean held a virtual forum to discuss solidifying their support for Special Olympic Athletes throughout the region.
Following the forum, the Ministers and representatives drafted a formal declaration acknowledging their commitment to these incredible athletes. The agreement, entitled the Special Olympics Caribbean Inclusive Sport Forum Declaration, is being signed by each country.
Today on behalf of Bermuda, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. Ernest Peets joined Karen Woollery, National Director of the Bermuda Special Olympics, for the signing.
Also in attendance was the Minister of Social Development and Seniors, Tinee Furbert, who championed the signing as a “fitting way” to kick off International Disability Week (Nov. 29 – Dec. 3).
Minister Peets said, “I’m pleased to partner with the Bermuda Special Olympics in raising awareness of the importance of supporting our athletes with disabilities. In signing the Declaration, I join other Sports Ministers throughout the Caribbean on ensuring the full inclusion of athletes with intellectual disabilities in all aspects of the community. This is especially significant as it unifies and solidifies our support of these very special individuals when they participate in international sporting competitions.”
Minister Furbert noted, “This is a great day for our special Olympians. They have worked so hard to be recognized both locally and internationally. The signing of this Declaration is a demonstration of this Government’s commitment to supporting those with special needs. I extend my thanks to Karen Woollery for the outstanding work that she is doing in this area, and we look forward to seeing more of our athletes recognized on the international stage.”
