Minister Darrell meets with Triathlete star

Earlier this week, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Senator, the Hon. Owen K. Darrell JP, welcomed Bermudian Triathlete Tyler Smith to the Ministry offices to hear more about the young Bermudian’s sports aspirations.

The public will recall that last month, Mr. Smith, along with several other talented local athletes, received the Ministry’s Elite Athlete Sponsorship award.

And this week the Minister wanted an opportunity to chat with Tyler to learn more about his progress.

Tyler shared that over the last five years he’s been consistently competing on the global stage and achieving success. He also detailed his sports journey noting that he has worked diligently at developing his skills via the Junior, Under-23, and Senior ranks. In fact, in the first 6 months of this year, he’s managed to improve his world ranking from outside of the top 300 to a personal best of 125th.

His 2023 results have been impressive, noting that he’s participated in key events, including the Continental Cup, World Cup, and World Triathlon Championship Series.

Tyler’s current 2023 highlights are as follows:

  • 2023 CAC Triathlon Championships – 2nd (Silver Medal)
  • 2023 Americas Triathlon Cup St. Peters – 6th Place finish
  • 2023 Africa Triathlon Cup Troutbeck – 5th Place finish
  • 2023 Africas Triathlon Cup Nelson Mandela Bay – 5th Place finish
  • 2023 Africas Triathlon Cup Masselspoort – 4th Place finish

Minister Darrell said, “It was very refreshing to sit down with Tyler and hear more about his journey. Tyler is dedicated and passionate about competing for Bermuda. He’s had some impressive performances this year and his ultimate goal is to be able to qualify and represent Bermuda at the 2024 Olympic Games. So, we are very supportive of Tyler and what he’s seeking to achieve. We recently presented several Bermudian athletes who showed commitment and promise with significant funding to aid in their training and development. Our Ministry will continue to do its part in supporting our up and coming, next generation of sports stars like Tyler in their pursuits. This is another example of Sport Matters.”
