Government Marks National Recovery Month

National Security

The Ministry of National Security, through the Department of National Drug Control (DNDC), joins communities around the world in observing September as National Recovery Month.

This year’s theme, “Recovery is REAL – Restoring Every Aspect of Life,” highlights that recovery is not only possible but is a process of rebuilding health, purpose, and connection.

The month serves as a reminder that people can and do recover, with the right treatment, support, and resources, and that recovery strengthens families, workplaces, and communities across Bermuda.

Recovery Month specifically recognises those overcoming challenges related to substance use disorders, including drugs, alcohol, and other addictive behaviours, and it honours the resilience of individuals and families on that journey.

Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael Weeks, JP, MP, said: “Recovery Month is a vital opportunity to break down the stigma that too often surrounds substance use.

“Too many individuals and families in Bermuda have suffered in silence or shame, but recovery is real and possible. Raising awareness is key in reminding our community that there is no shame in seeking help, and every person in recovery deserves dignity, compassion, and support.”

The DNDC established a committee with representatives from: Turning Point (Bermuda Hospitals Board), FOCUS Counselling and Transitional Living, Harbour Light (Salvation Army), Pathways, Right Living House (Department of Corrections) and Bermuda Addictions Certification Board, who are hosting community-focused events to celebrate Recovery Month.

The events begin with the BACB-sponsored Substance Abuse Professional of the Year Awards Ceremony, which honours those who provide outstanding care and support in the field of substance abuse treatment.

The Committee will also hold a Recovery Barbeque Fun Day, where individuals who have embraced recovery will be celebrated and acknowledged for their strength and perseverance.

In addition, an event featuring bowling and karaoke is being planned for those receiving treatment services.

The Department of Corrections (DOC) will also mark Recovery Month with events, including a barbecue picnic recognising current and past residents of the Right Living House, including those who supported them.

Later in the month, the DOC will host a graduation ceremony for inmates who have shown commitment to positive change through substance abuse recovery and rehabilitation.

The community partner agencies are hosting events as well. Some of the upcoming events include:

Minister Weeks added, “I commend the DNDC and the Department of Corrections for their commitment to helping people build new lives. Recovery is not simply about abstaining from substances; it is about restoring every aspect of life – health, family, dignity, and hope.

“I especially encourage struggling people to know that they are not alone, and help is available.”

The Government of Bermuda provides treatment for men and women in need through the Nelson Bascome Substance Abuse Treatment Centre in St. George’s.

The Centre offers residential and outpatient programmes for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol dependence, as well as access to a network of prevention and recovery services across the island.

Information on eligibility and treatment options is available at www.gov.bm/treatment-centres-substance-abuse.

By recognising Recovery Month, the Government reaffirms a commitment to building a healthier, more compassionate Bermuda where recovery is not only possible but celebrated.
