Treatment Centres for Substance Abuse

The Government of Bermuda has drug treatment centres for both men and women which provide care, education, health promotion, and support to overcome addiction.

Women’s Treatment Centre (WTC)

The Women’s Treatment Centre (WTC) is a residential substance abuse treatment facility for women in Bermuda.

The WTC is a therapeutic residential facility operating 24 hours a day to serve addicted women who have serious psychosocial adjustment problems and who require re-socialisation in a highly structured setting.

The WTC combines clinical care, education, and health promotion to help transform the lives of women affected by drug addiction and related issues. The WTC offers a 12-month programme covered in phases.

Admission Criteria

  • Must be female;
  • 18 years or older;
  • Have a substance abuse disorder;
  • If there is a psychiatric disorder, clients must first be treated and stabilized;
  • If a client is abusing alcohol, opiates or benzodiazepines, she must first complete detoxification at the Turning Point Detoxification Unit;
  • Medical and psychiatric reports are required on admission.

Clients with special needs will be accommodated based on the facility’s ability to provide services only.

Women’s Community Transitional Residence

The Women’s Community Transitional Residence (WCTR) is a transitional sober house for women in Bermuda. It provides long-term, independent community living for women who have completed at least one year of treatment or have maintained sobriety for over one year.

Women are admitted from the WTC or assessed for eligibility after completing treatment overseas. Women may stay in residence for up to two years or as required by individual needs.

Clients residing in the WCTR are charged a monthly fee based on a percentage of their gross income on a sliding scale basis. The fee is capped at 30% of the client’s gross income.

  • Minimum of one year sobriety
  • Employed or seeking employment
  • Actively involved in after care support
  • Medical and psychiatric stability

Men’s Treatment Centre

The Men’s Treatment Programme is a Therapeutic Community (TC) Residential Relapse Prevention Program. The treatment approach includes cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), behaviour modification, motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and counselling. There is also a focus on interpersonal and self-management skills.

The Centre provides comprehensive residential substance abuse treatment by promoting and restoring healthy individuals and families.

Admission Criteria

  • Must be male;
  • 18 years or older;
  • High risk of relapse;
  • Has had prior treatment and at least one relapse episode;
  • Has not been enrolled in The Men’s Treatment Programme in the last six months.
