Flora Duffy Mural

Today the Department of Culture announced details of the Flora Duffy mural, which is part of the recognition events to honour Bermuda’s first Olympic Gold Medalist.

The Ministry advised that 11 artists were invited to submit creative proposals for the project, with the successful candidates being artist Kendra L. Earls and graphic design artist Shanna Hollis. Both Ms. Earls and Ms Hollis will jointly create the mural (see photo and rendering attached).

Entitled “Unfolding Flora Duffy”, the mural will be located on the Church Street side of the General Post Office (GPO) Building.

The two artists note that the mural will be created in a “Pop Art” style, featuring vibrant colours, shapes and imagery. The aim of the design is to be interactive, inspiring and thought provoking as it highlights all the various stages of Ms Duffy’s journey to achieve success.

The Ministry notes that work on the Flora Duffy mural will start early November. And the mural creation is in keeping with the Department’s art on and in public buildings initiative.

The public will be aware that since October 11, the Bermuda Government arranged a number of events and activities to recognise Ms. Duffy’s historic achievement as Bermuda’s first Olympic Gold Medalist.

In addition to the creation of the mural, a motorcade and several recognition presentations took place on October 11.

Also, October 18, was designated a public holiday; Corkscrew Hill will be renamed Flora Duffy Hill; the area that encompasses the south field at the National Sports Centre has been named the Flora Duffy Stadium; a Flora Duffy commemorative stamp was unveiled, and an invite-only open air tribute concert took place.
