“As the Minister responsible for Sport, I’ve made it a priority to expand our investment and incentives, recognizing that it is essential for the continuous growth of sports in Bermuda,” said the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen Darrell, as he presented more than $81,000 in sponsorship awards to Bermuda’s elite athletes.
Aptly termed the Elite Athlete Sponsorship Awards, yesterday (July 27) eleven individuals received financial support not only to assist their sports pursuits but also as a recognition of their outstanding performance.
Minister Darrell said, “Bermuda has witnessed some remarkable performances at the international sports level recently. Our athletes have displayed grit, sportsmanship, camaraderie, and passion at every event. From our Special Olympians at the World Games in Berlin to the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, and the recently concluded Island Games in Guernsey, they have consistently excelled on the world stage.
“The Government is fully committed to developing not only our well-known athletes but also those in the younger ranks who are showing great promise to become the next generation of sports stars. To fulfil this commitment, the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Sport has introduced the Elite Athletes Sponsorship, designed to assist high-performing Bermudian athletes who exhibit dedication, promise, and achievements in their respective sports. This support aims to help athletes reach elite standards and represent Bermuda at major international events.”
Those who received awards included:
- Dage Minors - $12,000 - For continued training and competing overseas in preparation for international competition.
- Erica Hawley - $10,000 - For competing in more international races and events and increased access to a sports psychologist and massage sessions.
- Tyler Smith - $10,000 - For attendance of training camps prior to international competition.
- Liam Flannery - $8,000 – For bike equipment, racing fees and nutrition associated with racing (energy bars, recovery drinks etc.)
- Jessica Lewis - $8,500 – For racing chair modifications, equipment and expenses associated with training camp in Victoria, BC.
- Jyire Mitchell - $8,000 – To purchase spare parts for race bike.
- David Maycock - $6,338 - To attend an international bowling camp prior to international competition.
- Lamar Richardson - $6,000 – To attend an International Training and Research Centre Camp prior to international competition.
- Yushae DeSilva-Andrade - $6,000 – for participation in the Fortazela World Boccia Cup in Brazil
- Jediah Cumbermack - $5,000 – To attend a JP43 Training Camp
- Nicholas Pilgrim - $2,000 - Funding for High Performance Camp in Portugal.
Minister Darrell added, “Elite competitions represent the pinnacle of sport, showcasing the highest levels of skill, mastery, competitiveness, and sporting excellence. These events serve as inspiration for both competitors and spectators alike. The Government understands that in order for our athletes to compete at this level, they require financial support. Beyond the financial support, this ceremony is also a symbol of gratitude from the Government to these athletes for representing Bermuda with pride and excellence on the global stage.
