Department of Health Advances Interoperability with Successful Workshop

FHIR Implementation for Bermuda

The Department of Health, with support from the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), completed a two-day workshop introducing a new digital tool that will make it easier for healthcare providers to share immunization information. The FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) Interface strengthens Bermuda’s Electronic Immunization Registry (EIR), assisting private physicians and the Department of Health to exchange data more smoothly and improving the accuracy of the island’s health records. Bermuda is the first country in the region to launch this system.

Kim Wilson, JP, MP, Minister of Health stated: “This new system is about making healthcare easier and smarter. When doctors and clinics can securely share up-to-date information, it means less paperwork, more time for patients, and stronger protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. It’s a proud step forward for Bermuda’s health system and for the families we serve.”

The workshop brought together developers, private healthcare providers, and the hospital to see the system in action. Omni Medical is the first facility to begin using the new interface, made possible through the dedicated work of Mrs. Desiree Smith and the Expanded Programme on Immunizations (EPI) team.
