Recently (April 6), Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs, Walter Roban joined Her Excellency the Governor, Rena Lalgie, US Consul General Karen Grissette, Minister of Transport Lawrence Scott, and other invited guests for a tour of the recently arrived U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Angela McShan (WPC-1135).
The public will be aware that the vessel arrived in Dockyard on Wednesday and will be in Bermuda taking part in a multi-month fisheries enforcement operation.
The activities are in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Royal Bermuda Regiment and Coast Guard, and the Bermuda Police Service.
Minister Roban was afforded an opportunity to visit with the Cutter’s Commander and crew to hear more about the conservation and enforcement activities that will be conducted over the next few months.
As a note, the Angela McShan will be the first of three Coast Guard ships that will patrol seaward of the Bermuda Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which extends 200 miles from shore.
The Bermuda – US joint maritime operation will focus on the protection of the environment and living marine resources in this region and countering illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which is a global issue recently detected in the Mid-Atlantic.
