Ministry of Health Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Ministry of Health is encouraging women across Bermuda to prioritise their breast health, stay informed, and support one another in early detection and care.

Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Bermuda, affecting families, workplaces and communities across the island.

“Breast cancer touches so many lives in Bermuda,” said Minister of Health Kim Wilson, JP, MP. “This month is a reminder to be vigilant about your breast health. Look out for yourself, look out for your family, and look out for your friends. Encourage one another to get screened, ask questions, and make breast care a priority.”

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on National Mammography Day, the Ministry continues to highlight the importance of regular mammography and breast health education. Women are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider about their risk factors and recommended screening schedule.

“Early detection saves lives,” Minister Wilson added. “Knowing your risk and staying up to date with screening are essential steps in protecting your health.”

The Ministry also continues its work to improve coordination and access within Bermuda’s cancer care system. The Integrated Breast Cancer Pathway, developed through collaboration among the Bermuda Hospitals Board, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, clinicians and patients, is designed to streamline the breast cancer journey from screening and diagnosis through treatment and follow up.

This pathway is part of a broader effort to build a more patient‑centred and proactive health system, with integrated care pathways now implemented for breast cancer, prostate cancer, end‑of‑life care and several other areas of health.

The Ministry reminds the public that overall wellness plays an important role in supporting long‑term health. Staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet and limiting alcohol consumption can contribute to overall wellbeing.

However, Minister Wilson emphasised that breast cancer is not caused by personal choices alone. “Many factors are outside our control,” she said. “That is why access to appropriate screening and quality care remains so important.”

The Ministry of Health extends its appreciation to healthcare professionals, advocates, survivors, caregivers and community organisations who continue to support women affected by breast cancer.

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than a campaign, it is a commitment to women’s health,” said Minister Wilson. “A commitment to early detection, coordinated care, and ensuring every woman in Bermuda has the information and support she needs.”

The Ministry encourages all women to take time this month to schedule their mammogram, speak with their healthcare provider, and check in on the women they care about.
