Ministry Encourages Early Diagnosis and Greater Awareness During World Alzheimer’s Month

The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors is urging Bermudians to learn the signs of dementia, seek medical advice early, and help challenge the stigma surrounding the disease as Bermuda marks World Alzheimer’s Month this September.

This year’s theme, “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters,” highlights the importance of early diagnosis in helping individuals and families access appropriate care and support, make informed decisions, and plan for the future.

Dementia affects individuals and families across Bermuda, and as the population ages, the need for greater awareness and coordinated dementia care continues to grow.

The Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, said addressing dementia must remain a priority for Bermuda.

Minister Furbert stated, “As our population ages, the need for coordinated dementia care has become more urgent than ever. The 2024 National Seniors Strategy highlighted dementia because of its significant impact on individuals, families, and the wider community, as well as the Government’s commitment to addressing this growing public health issue. Healthy Ageing is the focus of Pillar One in the National Seniors Strategy, which emphasises improving our understanding of dementia in Bermuda and developing initiatives that address gaps and challenges related to the disease and its effects on our society.”

Minister Furbert added, “A dementia diagnosis can be difficult, but knowing sooner gives individuals and families more opportunities to understand what is happening, make plans, access support, and make the most of the time ahead. We want Bermudians to know that seeking help early is a sign of strength, not something to fear or hide. This World Alzheimer’s Month, I encourage everyone to learn more, start the conversation, and support those living with dementia and the people who care for them.”

Throughout World Alzheimer’s Month, the Ministry is encouraging the community to focus on three key messages:

Early Detection: Timely medical evaluation and early diagnosis can help individuals access appropriate treatment, care, and support sooner.

Reducing Stigma: Greater awareness and understanding can help challenge misconceptions, reduce discrimination, and create a more supportive environment for people living with dementia and their families.

Empowering Families: A diagnosis can give individuals, families, and caregivers an opportunity to plan ahead, make informed decisions, and build a support network.

The Ministry is calling on residents, families, community organisations, employers, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders to help raise awareness and encourage open conversations about dementia.
