Emotional and mental support before, during and after a hurricane

As a result of Hurricane Humberto and with the anticipation of Tropical Storm Jerry impacting the island everyone in Bermuda has been operating at a high level of anxiety for more than a week. We urge everyone to pay attention to their stress levels and those of loved ones. Some signs of stress include:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Limited attention span
  • Increased use of alcohol and drugs, abandoning healthy eating habits

A few coping tips include:

  • Connecting with others;
  • Getting adequate sleep and nutrition;
  • Exercising and resting are critical.

Parents and caregivers are asked to be mindful of the impact of these storms on their children. Children’s responses to stress and anxiety are different to those of adults. Here is a link to an international website which provides tips to help children manage hurricane-related stress.
