Under the Ministry of Home Affairs

The Department of Energy shapes Bermuda's policy, legislation, and regulatory framework for the energy, telecommunications, broadcasting, space, and satellite sectors, working to secure an affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy future for the island.

What do they do?

The Department's core work includes:

  1. lowering Bermuda's dependence on imported fossil fuels while balancing energy security, sustainability, and affordability;
  2. guiding residents and industry through education and advice on energy and telecommunications policy; supporting the growth of Bermuda's space, satellite, telecommunications, and energy infrastructure;
  3. and administering broadcasting and telecommunications licensing, including inspections, fee collection, and oversight of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commissions.

Current initiatives include the LED Initiative, which distributes energy-efficient light bulbs to households across Bermuda, alongside public outreach programmes and periodic reviews of national energy policy such as the National Electricity Sector Policy.
