1968 – 2018 Celebrating 50 Years of Adult Suffrage in Bermuda

The Cabinet Office today announced the observation of Universal Adult Suffrage in Bermuda. Tuesday 22 May, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the historic first election under the Bermuda Constitution Order 1968.

The day will be marked with a series of events.

Plaques will be unveiled in the three locations which have been polling stations for each General Election since 1968. They are: Dalton E. Tucker Primary School, Horticultural Hall at the Botanical Gardens and Francis Patton Primary School. The brief ceremonies will start at 9:00am with a prayer, a brief speech by the area Member of Parliament and then the unveiling of the plaque.

At 10:15am in the House of Assembly, a special Joint Session of Parliament will take place. There will be speeches by Premier, the Hon. David Burt, JP, MP, the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate and a member of the class of 1968 representing the trailblazers who were a part of that historic election.

Immediately following the Joint Session there will be an unveiling of the official portraits of former Speakers of the House; the Hon. Mr. Stanley Lowe, OBE, JP, (Speaker from 1998 – 2012) and the Hon. Mr. K. Randolph Horton, JP, (Speaker from 2013 – 2017). After which, there will be a tree planting on the grounds.

The Joint Session will be streamed live on the Government of Bermuda’s Facebook page and carried on radio station 105FM.
