Statistics Day 2020

Tomorrow, 15 October, the Department of Statistics will observe the 12th Annual Caribbean Statistics Day. Also another milestone will be observed this month, the 3rd World Statistics Day on the 20th October.

The latter is celebrated every five years.

Both events coincide with the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations which is being celebrated this year.

This year, the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSD) chose the theme “Connecting the World with Data We Can Trust”.

According to the UNSD, “this theme reflects the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems”.

Today the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Wayne Furbert, said, “These two celebrations are a collaborative endeavour initiated by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the UNSD. The  Department of Statistics acts as the national coordinator by providing local publications, providing promotional materials and organizing events and outreach efforts at a national level. In keeping with physical distancing requirements the Department will celebrate accordingly.

“The Department has planned two awareness activities; a HOTT 107.5 FM radio interview at 8.15 a.m. on October 15, and an Ocean 89 FM appearance on Tuesday, October 20th at 7.30 a.m. The objectives of both initiatives are to improve awareness of official statistics and the role it plays in Bermuda. We are keen to promote a wider use of statistics among different stakeholders, establish new partnerships, improve the coordination of the national statistical system, transform the image of statistics and empower and recognize the work of the staff of the Bermuda Department of Statistics.

“Finally, the Department will be focusing on launching their social media platform with regular content in order to increase awareness of the statistics they produce and promote  any current surveys or censuses.
I encourage the public to listen to the radio interviews and visit their social media pages to keep informed and up to date.”
