In a celebration steeped in heritage and holiday spirit, Premier David Burt hosted the Annual Cup Match Reception last evening at Camden.
The popular event which serves as a precursor to the Classic, brought together players, coaches, and dignitaries to honour the legacy and cultural significance of the island’s most cherished sporting tradition.
This year’s reception welcomed the 2025 Somerset and St. George’s Cup Match teams, along with their coaching staff, to a festive gathering ahead of the highly anticipated two-day cricket classic.
The Premier, joined by his family, extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to both teams, emphasising the importance of unity, sportsmanship, and the enduring legacy of Cup Match in Bermudian culture.
Among the distinguished guests were Somerset Cricket Club President Richard Scott and St. George’s Cricket Club President Mishael Paynter, who each spoke to the pride and preparation their clubs have invested in this year’s match.
Team captains Terryn Fray (Somerset) and Sinclair Smith (St. George’s) also addressed the audience, sharing reflections on their teams’ journeys and the honour of representing their communities on such a historic stage.
The reception was attended by local dignitaries, club officials, former Cup Match legends, and proud family members and supporters. The evening featured light refreshments, music, and a spirit of camaraderie that underscored the deep-rooted significance of Cup Match, not just as a sporting event, but as a celebration of Bermuda’s history, emancipation, and national pride.
A highlight of the evening was the official Cup Match photo, capturing the Premier, his family, and both teams together, a symbol of unity and mutual respect that defines the essence of Cup Match.
As the community prepares for another thrilling chapter in this storied rivalry, the reception served as a poignant reminder of the values that make Cup Match a cornerstone of Bermudian identity.
