The Cup Match holiday celebrates our culture and the history that binds us as Bermudians.
It is a time when we come together to enjoy the finest aspects of our heritage, cherishing the company of loved ones and eagerly anticipating two days of thrilling cricket between Somerset and St. George’s.
The anticipation leading up to the match is demonstrated by the vibrant and proud display of red and blue and blue and blue across the island. And this year, as much as any, the spirit of Cup Match can be felt from east to west!
This unique sporting holiday traces its origins to the abolition of slavery in Bermuda and the dawn of a new era of freedom in Bermuda following years of oppression.
As we take a moment to reflect upon the sacrifices of our ancestors, it fills us with immense pride to witness their enduring legacy brought to life year after year through this revered tradition that has indeed become a “Classic.”
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Executive, selectors, coaches, players, staff, and volunteers of both the Somerset Cricket Club and St. George's Cricket Club, who work tirelessly to put on this eagerly anticipated event.
We do not take for granted the months of preparation and countless hours of planning that go into hosting and participating in Cup Match. Their dedication and commitment are the driving force behind its success.
As my family and I eagerly anticipate joining the festive atmosphere, we extend our heartfelt wishes to all of Bermuda.
We look forward to immersing ourselves in this joyous occasion alongside the entire community, and we hope you and your loved ones enjoy all that the Cup Match holiday has to offer.
