Minister Weeks extends appreciation following Belco mass outage

Following Friday's mass power outage, the Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks said, “By now, all power has been restored to the island and Belco's teams continue to monitor the situation. I want to take this opportunity to extend thanks to all of the Belco engineers and Belco support teams who worked tirelessly around the clock yesterday to restore power to the island following the mass outage.

“It should be noted that key members of the Emergency Measures Organisation, including the Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Team, were present at Belco's headquarters to provide our support. And I can confirm that we were provided with regular updates regarding the power restoration efforts.
“I know that our community have many questions about last evening's mass blackout, and as Belco have shared, we anticipate that there will be a full and thorough accounting of Friday's events in the days ahead.”

Minister Weeks continued, “Like many businesses, when the outage hit, Government Offices had to close early, however Government services are now operating normally.  “From a public safety standpoint, I can advise that our uniformed services and emergency personnel, including the fire service, hospital staff and EMT's, were fully engaged last evening to ensure the safety and security of our community.  “And I must extend a very special thanks to the Bermuda Police Service who assisted from the onset of the crisis, providing traffic support at busy junctions and conducting reassurance patrols throughout the evening.
“Lastly, I want to extend my appreciation to the Bermuda public for their patience and cooperation during the outage. I've heard heartening accounts of members of our community coming together to check on the vulnerable and stepping in to help neighbours in need. So thank you to all.”
