Minister Caines ~ Shooting response

"Extremely saddened by this tragedy...," said the Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Caines, in the wake of last night's shooting death.

The Minister said, "It is very disheartening that as we prepare to celebrate our Cup Match holiday, our community is rocked by this tragic act of gun violence. I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. Our thoughts are with them during this time."

Minister Caines said that he has been briefed by the Bermuda Police Service about the ongoing investigation into the murder, and urged anyone who has any information about the incident to cooperate with the Police. The Minister indicated that the Crisis Response Team was also active last evening in response to the shooting.

It was just yesterday (July 27) that Minister Caines outlined a detailed Policing plan for the Cup Match holiday, which highlighted the steps being taken to ensure a police presence over the holiday weekend at various events around the island.

However Minister Caines noted this morning that added public safety steps will be taken this weekend to reassure the community.

Minister Caines said, "We are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our community by stepping up our public safety efforts. We will update our policing strategy for the holiday. And those who seek to disrupt should know that we will address any activity of violence with the appropriate measures."

Minister Caines said that he will hold a press briefing on Tuesday (July 31) to update on the Policing plan and to reiterate Government's commitment that there will be significant security measures in place to deter anti-social activity.
