With regular garbage collection set to resume on Monday and today being the last day of the limited household garbage collection, the Ministry of Public Works, Waste Management Section would like to provide a brief update on waste collection for the week ending Saturday, March 28, 2020.
Despite the generosity of many in our community who willingly assisted with garbage collection, residents must understand the challenges faced.
The Ministry was keenly aware that with the limited equipment available, collecting all the refuse from every residence across the island was an impossible task.
The simple reason being, an open back dump truck carries half a tonne of garbage whereby a fully loaded compactor truck carries up to 4.5 tonnes.
Despite the daunting challenge before us, we persevered and were able to reach most of the island and collect a significant volume of garbage.
With that in mind, the Ministry would like to thank the Corporations of Hamilton & St. George, Hunts Sanitation Services, Talbot Enterprises and a slew of private truckers who selflessly volunteered their services to collect garbage in their neighbourhoods and across the island.
As this limited garbage collection week ends, the Ministry can report that today we made another significant dent in garbage collection across the island.
And now as we move on, it is important to turn our attention to next week and the return to normal garbage collection.
To that end, the Waste Management Section team have put in place additional contingency plans to ensure garbage collection in Bermuda will be back on track in short order.
And so, the Ministry of Public Works wishes to remind members of the public to revert to their normal collection schedule, and thank you again for your understanding and cooperation.
