The Minister of National Security, The Hon. Renee Ming, JP, MP, attended a small gathering at Customs Headquarters on Wednesday, 26 January, to recognise International Customs Day.
The World Customs Organization (WCO) declared that the theme for 2022 International Customs Day (ICD) is“Scaling up Customs Digital Transformation by Embracing a Data Culture and Building a Data Ecosystem”.
Due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID 19 in Bermuda, the events typically held to mark ICD have been postponed until 2023. However, the Customs Department were still able to pay tribute to the long service of a number of Customs Officers.
Minister Ming said, “Despite the ongoing challenges that we as a country continue to face, I am glad that we were able to recognise Customs Day and the service of our Customs Officers.”
Principal Customs Officer Mrs LaVerne Smith was given a certificate signed by the Minister of National Security, marking her 40 years of service. Officer Smith was joined by Customs Officer Mr Clayton Fleming, who has served for 30 years and also received a certificate from Minster Ming.
