Hurricane Sam Update Minister of National Security’s Remarks

The Minister of National Security, Renee Ming advised today that the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) continues to monitor the forecast track of Hurricane Sam.

Yesterday (Sept. 29) Minister Ming chaired an EMO meeting, where all partner agencies confirmed that they were storm ready and prepared to mobislise should the need arise.

Currently the island is under a Tropical Strom Watch.

And at the 3.00 p.m. update, the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) indicated that Hurricane Sam (a category 4 storm) remains a potential threat, with its closest point of approach expected to be 190nm to the ESE, at 3.00 am on Saturday.

Minister Ming said, “We’re not anticipating Hurricane Sam to significantly impact Bermuda. Bermuda can possibly experience winds reaching tropical storm strength starting on Friday night into early Saturday morning. However, winds are not expected to reach 50 knots. And the island can expect to experience significant surge and wave activity with the passage of this storm.

“As I shared on Tuesday, Bermuda is no stranger to serious storms. As a country, we’ve been successful in managing through hurricanes by being ready and prepared. As predicted, this continues to be a very busy storm season and it's important that our residents and businesses remain vigilant and storm ready.

“As needed, we will provide further updates as Hurricane Sam’s track progresses.”
