Hurricane Nigel Advisory

Earlier today, the Ministry of National Security convened an Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) meeting to assess the current status of Hurricane Nigel.

Following the 12noon forecast from the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) Hurricane Nigel is not considered to be a threat to Bermuda at this time. Nigel’s closest point of approach to Bermuda is forecast to be around 508 nautical miles to the east at 9.00 pm on Tuesday September 19, 2023.

Today the Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks notes that the EMO will continue to monitor Hurricane Nigel over the next two days, however it’s not anticipated that there will be a disruption in government and public services.

Minister Michael Weeks said, “We know that this has been a very long and relentless hurricane season, and it’s certainly tested all of us. We have navigated through three storms in the last month, so I can absolutely appreciate that our residents are feeling as sense of storm fatigue.

“But the season isn’t quite done yet and I encourage residents to continue to maintain not only their preparedness but their strength and patience.

“We’re currently monitoring Hurricane Nigel to the south of us. We are being cautious, so the EMO met today to get the latest update on this storm. We aren’t anticipating an interruption of public services based on Nigel’s projected forecast, but we continue to be vigilant.”

The Minister encourages the community to take this opportunity in the lull in storm activity to replenish their storm reserves if necessary. And if residents wish to follow updates on this latest system, they should visit www.weather.bm or on the Bermuda Government’s official social media channels.
