The Ministry for the Cabinet Office and Digital Innovation, through the Department of Planning, advises that action has been taken to address delays in building permit approvals.
Effective today, Monday, February 16, SAFEbuilt has begun providing supplemental technical plan review support using advanced digital tools to help reduce the current backlog of applications and improve processing times.
SAFEbuilt is assisting primarily with the review of building permit applications currently in backlog. This additional capacity is intended to accelerate processing while maintaining Bermuda’s established planning and building standards.
Minister Rabain explained, “We heard the concerns. Delays in building permit processing affect homeowners, contractors, and the broader economy. We have taken the necessary steps to improve turnaround times while maintaining the high standards that protect Bermuda’s built environment.”
The Department of Planning remains the statutory decision-making authority under the Building Act 1988 and respective building codes. SAFEbuilt’s role is limited to technical review support and does not replace local staff or alter existing approval processes.
Applicants may receive correspondence from SAFEbuilt representatives during the technical review stage. All applications will continue to be assessed in accordance with Bermuda’s existing legislation, regulations, and planning policies.
The Ministry will monitor the impact of this initiative and provide updates as measurable improvements in processing times are achieved.
This initiative forms part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to utilising technology to modernise public services, increase efficiency, and ensure that development decisions are timely, transparent, and responsible.
