Government to observe International Women's Day 2024

IWD 2024

This week, the Government of Bermuda will recognise International Women's Day (IWD), which is celebrated on March 8, 2024.

This year’s theme is #InspireInclusion. Over the course of this week, the Public Service will host a series of activities which aim to shine a spotlight on the important role women play in Government.

  • March 6, there will be a Public Service IWD Wellness Walk around Hamilton.
  • March 7, Minister Tinee Furbert, Minister for Gender Affairs, will host a lunch “Table Talk” with Future Leaders and Youth Parliamentarian female members to discuss topics relevant to women and girls’ empowerment.
  • March 8, women from the uniformed services (Customs, Police, Corrections, Fire) will greet commuters at the Paget Crow Lane round-a-bout.
  • March 8, there will be a Panel Discussion streamed internally to the public service, which will feature female officers who have all been “Firsts” in their career.
  • Panelists include, the Head of the Public Service, Cherie Whitter; Cindy Clarke, the first female Bermudian Director of Public Prosecutions; Tami Ray, Bermuda’s first female Senior Ferry Master (Ferry Pilot); and Keeva Joelle Benjamin, Bermuda’s first female Commissioner of Corrections.
  • During Friday’s panel discussion there will be special IWD video messages from Governor Reña Lalgie and the Minister Furbert.

Today, Cherie Whitter, Head of the Public Service for the Government of Bermuda said, “On International Women’s Day, female officers in the public service will join millions of women around the globe in celebration and recognition of women’s rights and equality. This year’s theme is #InspireInclusion. When women are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment. The theme also signifies the journey of women who have broken barriers and opened doors in domains traditionally dominated by men. This week is an opportunity to highlight the stories of resilience, determination, and leadership of women who have carved out new paths for themselves and others. As Head of the Public Service, I’m extremely proud of the work that women throughout the service do on a daily basis. And on March 6 and March 8, we plan on recognising International Women’s Day by hosting activities that celebrate women in the public service.”

The March 6th lunchtime IWD Wellness Walk starts from the Cabinet Office. The public is advised that there may be some minor traffic delays. The uniformed services Crow Lane greeting starts at 7.00 am on March 8th.
