Flour and cake mixes recalled due to potential health risk

The Ministry of Health and Seniors is advising the public not to eat raw dough or raw batter made with Gold Medal flour or two types of Betty Crocker cake mix due to a potential risk of e. coli contamination. General Mills of Minneapolis, Minnesota, continues to collaborate with health officials to investigate a multistate outbreak of E. coli O121, and is expanding its recall of Gold Medal flour and two Betty Crocker cake mixes to include flour produced earlier in the fall that may still be in consumers’ pantries. In the U.S. and Canada 42 people have been sickened. Cooked or baked General Mills flour or Betty Crocker mixes are considered safe. All surfaces,
hands and utensils should be properly cleaned after contact with flour, batter or dough. Parents or
guardians who have made “play dough” with the recalled flour should discard it immediately. Locally, the products are distributed by Butterfield and Vallis. The company’s managers are working to remove products from shelves in retail stores. Consumers are asked to check their cupboards for any of the suspect products. Recalled foods found with matching identification should be thrown away or returned to the retailer for disposal and a refund.
