Child Abuse Prevention Month

Statement by the Minister of Social Development and Sports the Hon. Nandi Outerbridge JP MP

Proclamation - Child Abuse Prevention Month

WHEREAS, in 2016, the Department of Child and Family Services received 1,011 reports of child abuse and neglect; and

WHEREAS there was an increase in the number of cases of sexual abuse; and

WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect is a serious problem that affects every segment of our community, and in order for us to find solutions there must be input and action from every member of our community; and

WHEREAS, our children are our most valuable resources and will shape the future of Bermuda; and

WHEREAS, child abuse can have long-term psychological, emotional and physical effects that can have lifelong consequences for victims of abuse; and

WHEREAS, effective child abuse prevention campaigns succeed because of meaningful connections and partnerships that are created between the Department of Child and Family Services, education, health, police, community clubs and faith-based organizations who provide a collaborative preventive approach; and

WHEREAS, communities must make every effort to promote programs and activities that benefit children and their families and;

WHEREAS, prevention remains the best defense for our children and families;

NOW THEREFORE: I, The Hon. Nandi Outerbridge JP MP, Minister of Social Development and Sports, do hereby proclaim April as:
NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH.

All citizens are urged to recognize this month by dedicating ourselves to improving the quality of life for all children and families in our community.
